The most-watched sports event in the world returns in 2022 when 32 teams participate in Qatar for the FIFA World Cup. The World Cup, which started in 1930, is the most prestigious soccer event in the world. The tournament is held every four years, but in 1942 and 1946 World War II.
Since its establishment, the worldwide tournament has been maintained in 17 nations, with Qatar hosting for the very first time this year. World Cup will go out on November 20 and end on December 18.
The first match between Qatar and Ecuador and the tournament’s final match will be played in Doha’s Lusail Stadium. Qatar was decisively trounced 2-0 by Ecuador on the opening day of the competition.

- The United States matched wells 1-1, while England defeated Iran 6-2.
- As Day 3 progresses, Saudi Arabia may have pulled off the most significant shock of the tournament, beating Argentina 2-1.
- France maintained their lead after beating Australia 4-1.
- Both Denmark-Tunisia and Mexico-Poland finished in draws.
- Day 4 opened with a tie between Morocco and Croatia at Al Bayt Stadium in front of 59,407 spectators.
- Japan beat Germany, and Spain defeated Costa Rica 7-0.
- Belgium also defeated Canada 1-0.
- With just a few days till the Round of 16, teams are completing the Group Stage and attempting to escape tight matchups.
Qatar was eliminated on November 25, while Canada was stopped on November 27. The Knockout Stage will begin with the Round of 16 after a challenging Group Stage. If a match is deadlocked after 90 minutes of play during the Knockout Stage, two 15-minute periods of extra time will be added.
If extra time runs out and the score remains tied, the match will be decided by a penalty shoot-off. Croatia will face Argentina in the Semifinals following an upset-filled Quarterfinals, while Morocco will face France. In the graphic below, you can see all of the 2022 World Cup venues.

In preparation for the games, Qatar invested $200 billion in infrastructure. The games will be played in 8 venues, the fewest of any World Cup. Seven of the eight stadiums were built specifically for the games. The last remaining stadium was rebuilt.
The first Winter World Cup
Four World Cup matches will be played on Thanksgiving for the first time. There will be a quadruple header on Black Friday. Due to the high heat in Qatar throughout the day, this is the first time a host nation would have entirely air-conditioned venues. A trio of ladies will become the first female referees to work in a men’s World Cup.
Stephanie Frappart (France), Salima Mukansanga (Rwanda), and Yoshimi Yamashita are the pioneering referees (Japan) Russia has been barred from participating in this year’s competition due to its invasion of Ukraine.
This year’s tournament mascot is La’eeb. The World Cup official song in 2022 is “Hayya Hayya” by Trinidad Cardona, Davido, and Aisha.
“Hayya Hayya” translates to “Better Together.”
Wales qualified for the World Cup live for the first time since 1958, and only Brazil has qualified for every World Cup squad.

Qatar is competing in the World Cup live for the first time, having won the AFC Asian Cup. They qualified for the tournament since they are the host nation. While Qatar has been confirmed, Italy is absent most from this year’s tournament.
Italy, which has won the most World Cups, failed to qualify in 2018 and was defeated by North Macedonia in March. Therefore they will not be attending this year. Some of the sport’s brightest stars may participate in their last World Cup.
Lionel Messi (Argentina) and Cristiano Ronaldo (Portugal), 35 and 37 years old, may be approaching their last tournaments or the last one in their primes, respectively.
France, led by superstars Kylian Mbappe and Karim Benzema, will defend their World Cup title after winning it in Russia in 2018.
France has two World Cup titles from 16 appearances, the first coming in 1998.
